La poeta y cineasta iraní Forugh Farrojzad fue una figura muy controvertida en su época. Encarnó el espíritu de rebelión contra una sociedad, la iraní, que detrás de una aparente occidentalización seguía profundamente ligada a los dictámenes religiosos y morales de una rígida cultura patriarcal. Cinco décadas después de su trágica muerte a la edad de 32 años sigue siendo la voz más importante y revolucionaria de la literatura persa. Su obra es el testimonio de una mujer apasionada que vive en un país lleno de contradicciones, el Irán de los años 50 y 60 con el sah y la dolce vita persa, muy distinto a la teocracia que se instauraría después de la revolución islámica de 1979. Sus versos anuncian el nacimiento de una nueva mujer sin tapujos que se enfrenta a los crueles juicios morales y religiosos de la sociedad en la que vive. Tanto en su escritura como en su vida privada, desafió los estereotipos femeninos y conmocionó a la entera sociedad iraní. Su talento es inconfundible: ferozmente honesta, perspicaz y maravillosamente lírica, su trabajo se ha ganado un lugar de honor en la milenaria tradición de los ilustres poetas iraníes.

Iranian poet and filmmaker Forugh Farrokhzad was a highly controversial figure in her time. She embodied the spirit of rebellion against a society which, despite its apparent westernization, remained deeply bound to the religious and moral dictates of a rigid patriarchal culture. Five decades after her tragic death at the age of 32, she continues to be the most important and revolutionary voice in Persian literature. Her work bears witness to a passionate woman living in a country full of contradictions —Iran in the 1950s and 60s, under the Shah and the Persian «dolce vita», so different from the theocracy that would take hold after the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Her verses herald the birth of a new, unapologetic woman who confronts the harsh moral and religious judgments of the society around her. In both her writing and her private life, she defied female stereotypes and shocked Iranian society as a whole. Her talent is unmistakable: fiercely honest, perceptive, and wonderfully lyrical, her work has earned a place of honor within the millennia-old tradition of illustrious Iranian poets.
