Ediciones Documenta es una editorial independiente dedicada a las prácticas artísticas y la cultura contemporánea. Es un espacio de investigación práctica donde se relacionan palabra, escena, cuerpo, acción y publicación. El libro Espacios revelados. Prácticas artísticas en territorio es una pieza más del encuentro que tuvo lugar en Guadalajara justo antes de la llegada de la pandemia a la vida de todxs nosotrxs. Este libro es un laboratorio de ideas sobre los espacios vacíos, desactivados, abandonados, en un momento de la historia y una reflexión sobre las prácticas artísticas en territorio como motores de búsqueda o sismógrafos que nos permitan encontrar indicios sobre las ausencias que constituyen esos vacíos. Las preguntas que funcionaron como motor de investigación de este dispositivo editorial fueron: ¿cómo habitamos y revelamos un libro como espacio? Esta publicación reúne lxs artistas e investigadores que formaron parte de Espacios Revelados Guadalajara, e invita a lxs lectores a establecer una relación activa con el espacio del libro como condensador de experiencias.
El libro tiene la fuerza de ser un dispositivo activador y dinamizador de comunidades y en medio del distanciamiento social se presenta como un cuerpo con el que podemos relacionarnos de manera física a través del tacto, la manipulación y la cercanía, que nos recuerda que un libro «ocupa» un lugar. Pero no podemos desconocer que su campo y dinámicas de acción han sido afectadas y reclama una imaginación extra para ponerse en marcha en este tiempo distópico. ¿Cómo habitar ferias virtuales con un material de esta naturaleza?, ¿cómo presentar un libro que no es un catálogo, sino una pieza que llega tarde al evento y que se nutre de los conceptos, poéticas, conversaciones y preguntas surgidas en éste? ¿Cómo dimensionar el artefacto que genere ciertas preguntas, inquietud, de un libro que suelta cosas, que está abierto, que no define al lector si debe o no conservarlo intacto?
The book «Revealed Spaces. Artistic Practices in Territory» is one more piece of the encounter that took place in Guadalajara just before the pandemic arrived in all our lives. This book is a laboratory of ideas about empty, deactivated, and abandoned spaces at a particular moment in history, as well as a reflection on artistic practices in territory as engines of inquiry or seismographs that allow us to detect traces of the absences that make up those voids. The questions that fueled the research behind this editorial device were: How do we inhabit and reveal a book as a space? This publication brings together the artists and researchers who took part in «Espacios Revelados Guadalajara» and invites readers to establish an active relationship with the space of the book as a condenser of experiences.
The book carries the strength of being an activating and community-dynamizing device, and in the midst of social distancing it presents itself as a body with which we can relate physically through touch, handling, and closeness—a reminder that a book occupies a place. Yet we cannot ignore that its field and dynamics of action have been altered, calling for extra imagination to set it in motion in these dystopian times. How can we inhabit virtual fairs with a material of this nature? How can we present a book that is not a catalogue, but a piece that arrives late to the event and is nourished by the concepts, poetics, conversations, and questions that arose within it? How can we frame an artifact that provokes questions and unease—a book that releases things, that remains open, that doesn’t decide for the reader whether or not it should be kept intact?
